         Phyllostachys vivax

Other names:  "Vivax" or "Chinese Timber Bamboo"

Statistics:  Height:  40-60+ feet   Diameter:  3-6 inches

The word “Vivax” comes from Latin meaning vigorous.  Vivax is a true champion as far as speed of growth, great height, and large diameter are concerned.  There places in Oregon where it grows over 60 feet tall and over 4 inches in diameter.  Its smooth glossy culms are vibrant green.  Apparently immigrant Chinese cannery workers brought Vivax with them to the West Coast in the latter half of the 1800s to provide tasty spring vegetables.  The shoots of Vivax are large, smooth, and excellent eating.  Very old groves of Vivax still exist on parts of the coast near the cannery sites.

Before

After

At left: the Vivax was going under the fence and breaking the asphalt on the other side.  We removed the rhizomes and cleared out culms to make a maintenance pathway about two feet wide between the bamboo and the fence.
