         Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’

Other names:  "Spectabilis"

Statistics:  Height:  20-30 feet   Diameter:  1-2 inches

Spectabilis is a bright yellow bamboo.  It is one of the “crook-stem” bamboos with dramatic kinks in the lower portions of its culms.  Its culms are rather rough, feeling like 80 grit sandpaper.  Spectabilis is very attractive with its dark green sulcus set off by bright yellow.  Its shoots come up in early spring and are often pink in color.  They are fine eating if you have extras.  Spectabilis is happy growing densely, and usually grows 20-30 feet tall.   It's popular for screens and hedges.

Bright new Spectabilis shoots in May.

Deep summer shades of Spectabilis culms.

Noteworthy kinks--typical of the family P. aureosulcata.

New shoots in March, nice pink/purple stripes.

Spectabilis is a fearsome runner and you can see how prolific it is by the way the shoots come up like little marching toy soldiers at very regular intervals.
