         Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Castillon’

Other names:  "Castillon" or "Kinmei Madake" (金明苦竹)

Statistics:  Height:  20-50 feet   Diameter:  1-3 inches

Castillon is one of the gorgeous yellow bamboos.  Its smooth gold-colored culms with its striking green sulcus is highly sought after by bamboo collectors and those who want a bit of the unusual and dramatic.  Castillon's color is one of its nicest features.  It brightens up dark spaces and its overall feeling is one of lightness.  The medium-sized leaves are attractively variegated.  The color truly reminds one of treasure.  Castillon is a cultivar of the Madake (P. bambusoides), and is incredibly vigorous here at Bamboo Valley.  Castillon, similar to Madake, is excellent for weaving and other crafts.

The beautiful color of large Castillon culms..  No wonder its such a collector's item!

The new shoot has lots of dots, stripes and pink.  Like a circus of color in your garden.

New shoots emerging past the old foliage, about 20 feet up.

Utilitarian Castillon--doing its duty as a screen to keep out the sights and sounds of the nearby railroad tracks.

A bird's nest tucked neatly inside the foliage.

Tomatoes thrive in the light and moisture of a newly planted Castillon grove.
